Arg e Alishah History
The journey of Arg e Alishah history sets off in the early 14th century when the Ilkhanid dynasty ruled. The project, which was administered by Taj al-Din Alishah Jilani, vizier of Oljeitu and Abu Sa’id, was planned to begin around 1318-1330 CE. Its concept was partitioned into several parts and was quite beyond a mere fortress; it was supposed to be Tabriz’s grand mosque (Masjid-e Alishah) with the congregation for the faithful, a madrasa, a khanqah, and a library, all furnished with vast prayer halls.
A tragedy struck in the course of its construction, and the main iwan vault collapsed—the most gigantic one at the time—which was the cause of cessation of work after Alishah’s death. The centuries passed, and the Arg of Tabriz history was one of fall and change. Major destruction was caused by earthquakes, especially the one in 1641 that wiped out the whole city, barely leaving a few structures.
The complex was turned into a military encampment during the Qajar era, when it got the name “Arg,” meaning ‘citadel,’ and barracks and a cannon foundry were added. The site underwent a dramatic change with the Russian bombing in the early 20th century and then urban development. Nevertheless, the structure that managed to survive is still a powerful witness to the grandeur of the Ilkhanid.

The most remarkable aspect of the Arg of Tabriz is its gigantic iwan wall to the south, which was initially a part of the mosque’s mihrab area. The wall, completely made of bricks, is about 28–30 meters high and more than 10 meters thick in certain places.
